I didn't get out too much this year....but....

I did see Tommy Emmanuel (always love his shows)

Saw a band can't remember their name ;-) perform their first ever public gig at one of the locals. I was amused to hear the lead guitarist say something like "Now it's time for some blues"...before unleasing a furious punk/rock style tune, after which he said something like "everyone always loves listening to blues". Funny stuff.

Not a live performance as such, but I did get around to watching the Pink Floyd Pulse concert in it's entirety. Simply awesome. The guitar solo on Comfortably Numb during the encore is mind-blowing. The Great Gig in the sky performance by Sam Browne is also amazing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBWY3bli92Y - check out 2:05...). Also bought Dave Gilmours "Remember that night", and "Live in Gdansk". Both incredible.

Needless to say, I'm looking forward to some live music in 2010.

I'm too old (and too cheap) to go most of the big concerts, so mine reflect my budget and location:

Dallas Frasca & Kim Churchill - (thanks for the tip Gerardf!) secret gig
Special Beat - BF 2009
High Horse's last gig (complete with guitar smashing) - The Wicko
Baby Animals - RSL on the Sunshine Coast, can't remember the name
Bob Log - Northern Star
The Grates - Groove in the Moo
Tijuana Cartel - The Cambridge
Bluejuice - Bimbadgen Blues
Black Sorrows - Lizottes

Been a nice exercise to reflect on this...I'd really like to see Youngbill the gig pig's list....

Buddy Guy is without doubt the best guitar player alive.......the way he plays is beyond anyone. Amen

Well done..specially with the 6 kids! (We have 4)

What I meant is I get OUT there, just not amongst 50 000 punters a squillion miles from the stage (hello Pearl Jam coupla weeks back)...much prefer more up close and personal over massive concerts (except BF!)...

Rock on oldies!

Repete...nothing like a visit to New Orleans to make a list complete for the Year! Some of the best gigs I have seen in my life have been in that town...Jimmy Smith in the small Jazz Tent at the Fairgrounds....simply magic.

I've been a bunch of great gigs this year, but this is the top 10:

10. COLDPLAY (Sound Relief) - I pretty much hated their music until I saw them here. An absolutely brilliant 25 minutes of performance. Absolute commitment from the entire band.
9. PEARL JAM (Sydney Football Stadium) - Vedder had the flu, but if he hadn't mentioned it, I wouldn't have guessed. One of the truly great live acts of the last 20 years.
8. CORB LUND (The Sandringham Hotel) - The best thing to come out of Canada since Joni Mitchell. Backed by The Hurtin' Albertans, he knocked out a set that was equally lyrically tender and musically ripsnorting.
7. KAISER CHIEFS (V Festival) - A flawless festival set from one of the best contemporary rock groups.
6. JEFF BECK (Enmore Theatre) - One of my favourite practitioners of the electric guitar in my favourite Australian venue.
5. BEN FOLDS (Sydney Opera House) - A relentlessly energetic performance, Hendrix-like piano and a great selection of tunes.
4. RODNEY CROWELL (Factory Theatre) - His Bluesfest sets were awesome, but the Factory set was so intimate and expansive.
3. TOMMY EMMANUEL (City Recital Hall Sydney) - Thrilling performance from the greatest guitarist on the planet. An incredible creative spirit.
2. TIM FINN (Bluesfest) - 2nd set. First was also brilliant, but the second contained the only genuine encore I've ever seen. He has the energy of a 19 year old.
1. THE WHO (Acer Arena, Sydney) - My favourite band, glorious performance.
