Time for my annual post highlighting the unsung heroes of the fest - the often anonymous rhythm sections and backup musicians who clearly enjoy their work and contribute significantly to the featured artist's success.

Standouts for me this year were Sonny Landreth's rhythm section - magic bass & drums which pushed Sonny all the way without ever overshadowing. Jeff Curran with Dallas Frasca is always worth a look, too.

Any other suggestions?

Andrew

Thanx for reintroducing this thread Andrew - cos it gives me the opportunity which I think I missed last year to nomitate Patrice Rushen with Lee Ritenour in 08

As for this year, if permanent group members qualify, by far the best drummer I saw, as well as best guitar licks and near as dammit best bass were all from Son Veneno - and as for their brass section (and backing vocals), I can only speculate how well they might have gone with Alpha Blondy!!

Rodney Crowell's buddy Will Kimbrough did not impress me with his solo on the opening song. I made a point of telling my friends this at the time.

Well he must have heard me because from then on he constantly threatened to steal the show!

I thought poodle did an excellent job drumming with Fitzy, itch had better look out.

Lucinda's duelling guitarists also did the job for me, great to watch.

Oh yeah , and as waffles has already mentioned the drummer with Sonny L twirling the sticks while playing was a nice touch.

Itchy's done for at least the short term and Hat will be returning from a 3 month european tour with a new duo partner. A great singer and drummer who should take the act to a new and different level

You know who I really missed this year? Music Maker Foundation.

If they were there then you could add their drummer to the list, not for anything other than having some damn good style. Walking around the kit while still playing, and his get-up was always great.

Music Maker Foundation were always a good bet. I hope they return.

What - no mention of the awesome Vika Bull, singing with Paul Kelly. What a welcome return she made to the BluesFest stage!

Seeing how the Vegas Kings were there anyway to lug Bob Logs gear around and launch the boat it would have been nice to see them do their own set.
