I'm guessing if all the headliners have been announced, we're not going to see a Midnight Oil reformation this year?

Peter Garrett continues to say Bluesfest is the first event they will play if they reform.

They are definitely touring in 2017.
Rehearsals are already underway.
Probably looking unlikely that they'll play Bluesfest, though.

Reading my tea leaves. 10 reasons to anticipate an OIL's announcement:
1. 16th anniversary of oils last playing BF will be on 14/4/17.
2. Attractive to both old and newer punters. (compare to Crowded House's Opera House recent gigs; or Go Betweens new relevance in 12 months before Grant's death)
3. Enough hints on their website: We wanted to tell you that the five of us are finally making plans to get together again for some gigs next year (2017). We’re looking forward to hopefully playing overseas and touring our homeland for the first time since 2002. We won’t know exactly when, where and what we’ll be doing before next January (2017) at the earliest...Meanwhile, we’re still busy with other projects outside the band.

4. Backsliders last gig is Port Fairy Folk festival in late March 2017; no other clashes for other members on their individual web sites; and the band has not been announced for Coachella, so that leaves April... free.
5. If it is a later US or UK festival, an extended gig at BF on Good Friday would iron out some kinks and help match fitness. Playing together in front of 10,000 under a BB full moon...
6. Loss of 2 marquee acts means Good Friday needs something with news worthiness at least and the oils 1st aussi reunion concert would generate its own buzz. Ticket sales fillip.
7. Should be some loose change in the BF till and disclosures by Peter Noble in 6/16 that oils will play BF when they get back together will accelerate desire from all parties in "getting back together" sooner.
8. 2016 was a reminder that tomorrows do not come with a written guarantee. Wait for 40th anniversary of 1st album's release at one's own risk.
9. US Forces have trumped a delayed reunion date. It's time. So much opportunity for comment.

Overseas dates are rumoured to be in the northern hemisphere summer, so Bluesfest would be a good hit out.

There have been rumours that The Oils will play a gig at Hanging Rock in Vic.
Frontier Touring have an exclusive contract with that venue till 2018, according to Wikipedia.

Messing with our heads? A declaration of the truth? Marketing in the modern era? Whatever. If it turns out to be "an alternative fact" it may end up being a dent to the BF's trust with its punters and a tarnish on the brand loyalty that has prompted punters to confidently help BF's future cashflow by purchasing multiple tix 14 months in advance. A response might be, nah- in future I'll wait until all of the (bull)dust settles before I buy my tix.
