The first time I had a chance to see Mavis Staples, I inexplicably missed her - an error I have not made again!

Yes missed them the other year

When you're lost in the rain in Juarez
And it's Eastertime too
And your gravity fails
And negativity don't pull you through
Don't put on any airs
When you're down on Rue Morgue Avenue
They got some hungry women there
And they really make a mess outta you.

I decided to make the stupid decision of indulging in some medicinal/pharmaceuticals and almost died. It was an absolutely horrific experience that I wish on no one.

I didn't so much wake up there I basicly turned blue and tried to go to sleep..... Eternally. But you could say it was a "wake up call"

Hi Scot,,,,,,,,,

I skulled half a bottle of Jim Beam black before entering in an effort to save money on drinks.
I woke up in the tent, covered in vomit, crying like a little baby, just to make it even more embarrassing.

I sometimes look in the St Johns tent nowdays and see all the people on stretchers
and I think to myself "" Yep, been there, done that ""

I have mentioned this on the forum before,

I'm very careful nowdays, I tell myself "Remember St John's"

having been to ALL 25 bluesfests, there are a lot of bands i cant remember due to my mind being elsewhere. think what you were into 20 years ago!!
so i have eventually come to the realisation that i was missing what i love...some incredible music.
hence i now limit my substances....and enjoy the music...and remember it!!Anxious

ps ive slept through some great acts!!

I don't want to hang up my rock n roll shoes
I get a good time feeling every time I hear those blues.

I think you have admitted to something many of us long time regs have done in the past waffles. I slept through an entire thurs night several years ago much to my chagrin. My old bf partner slept through bb king, bonamassa and rodriguez in recent years much to my disgust. As age has caught up I appreciated sharing this year with you and actually seeing the whole 5 days through.

Too many to mention! But the biggest (regrettably) would've been James Brown - by the time I got to Mojo before he started, it was packed 20 deep on the outside! I was more than happy to see T Model Ford and Robert Belfour and shake their hands at the front of the stage after their gig (they were just amazing!!) - actually Peter, what would be the chances of getting Robert Belfour back?

I refuse to mention the artists whose performances I have slept through....I blame the stresses of work and maybe a few too many sherbets.

over the 6 full bluesfests i have been to so far i have only ever fallen asleep during 2 sets & i was not drunk nor sleepy during either set.

all i will say is the guy who closed mojo on the opening night of bf 2010 & the guy who did a solo & acoustic set in crossroads on the friday afternoon of the 2013 bluesfest were both boring & put me to sleep. unfortunately at both occasions i had the embarrasing wake up of someone tapping me on the shoulder as they noticed i was out cold.

i will never see either artist again.

If you can't remember their names, there may still be the risk of stumbling into their tent during a future BF.

While being an act at BF that I missed (and not an act at BF while I was there), I will always regret not being at the RL Burnside gig at the old Juke Joint. It happened the year prior to me attending my first BF. While the room was smaller than some of the bars at the new BF venue, it was a great venue where it was physically possible for some acts to raise the roof.

Nodded off when midnight oil played back in 2001. & still recall the surprised look on the punter seated behind me.
The biggest disappointment for me @ bf will always be missing steve miller,Paul Simon & Santana @ bf 2013 due to an overcrowded disabled viewing area @ mojo.
If BF want to invite artists back then those 3 are the ones I would like to have the chance to see again(this time in a not so crowded disabled viewing area)

just a note re that disabled mojo platform... during jimmy cliff who played before steve miller there were 42 people seated on the platform by the untrained & unexperienced volunteers who had no clue how to run the platform. i am not sure how many of these stayed for steve miller but i recall it was a lot. this year, the exact same platform at the mojo stage was still there but this time there was an oh&s recommendation for capacity which was only 16 people... makes you wonder what bluesfest would have done if the platform had collapsed during jimmy cliff doesn't it? anyway this year they got trained professional people on to run the platforms & the crowd issues were resolved so if the artists come back i think you will have a much better experience.

ps: the artists i was talking about in my post above were jack johnson & ben harper for those who don't remember specifics of the schedules for the years i mentioned.
regards

Hi Mate

I missed James brown to, which was a bummer, but it was too crowded and there were a few dickheads pushing their way through, etc.

So instead of getting in a fight, my brother and I left and we ended up watching Jackson Brown and Steve Earle, I think it was got up, and they did a version of Cocaine Blues, which was quite apt.
