From the numbers pourng out of the tent, I don't think the promoters endeared themselves; unfortunately, I think many had much higher expectations.

Single biggest problem with "mystery sets" - if it was gonna be a headline calibre artists, why not advertise that? People get carried away with the speculation and end up expecting The Beatles jamming with Jimi....

My expectations weren't particularly lofty, but I was expecting either a) someone who hadn't been previously announced, or b) some combo of announced artists playing something. For it to be an announced band who had already played a set, with another to come, it was something of a let down.

Likewise... didn't expect much, but expected more than a generic local band that I'd otherwise avoid.

Who fell through???

Some were curious & some were not keen to see them so it just created a huge congestion near the tent.
All good as it gave me a chance to catch up with waffles.

They got the cocaine, oxycontin, mushrooms, marijuana
Vodka, plastic pop-off, twist one off
Yesterday I smoked, today I don't
Yeah, yeah, yeah

the congestion was getting through the signing lineup...it blocked the main walkway......for passenger.

I don't want to hang up my rock n roll shoes
I get a good time feeling every time I hear those blues.

John Williamson was great.
With nearly every band trying to reach "Peak" moments with their instruments
along comes Williamson and just lets the lyrics do the talking.
Hope he comes back next year.

I did overhear one the security guards at Jambalaya say it was going to be KC & The Sunshine Band but got changed for some reason. Not sure what amount of truth is in that but it is what I heard.

Hopefully this will pack a little more punch next year.

Suggestion.

A collaboration or a band that isn't listed

Agree. They could easily book a legendary Aussie band but don't put them on the bill.

You have to have time to watch it.
I have had so many sets I would have liked to see the past couple of years but have not been able to do so
that whether there is or is not a mystery act,is of no consequence.

"An artist never really chooses when and where they will play.It is for promoters to make offers. It comes down as to whether tours are financially viable." Quote John Mayall.

BF isn't like a normal single (or alternating) stage festival where you can slip a couple of guests into the lineup without impacting the schedule.

Some patrons spend weeks (months?) planning who they will see and how to fit them all in. At the extremes, an unannounced spot risks either:

a) upsetting people because the act is not seen as significant enough to warrant the hype.
b) upsetting people who were unable to make it because they had already planned to see acts that they knew would be performing at that time.

The early posts on this thread are testament to the risk of upsetting the patrons.

I think that with the already high risk of patrons suffering from "i wish i had seen x" syndrome at the end of the event, cramming too many "only one chance" performances onto the bill can be a negative.

I would prefer something like the Chris Wilson-led ensemble that performed on Easter Sunday morning one year. Or the Fatherhood project's concert which featured artists who were already on the bill.

Well said (my thoughts exactly)

Having that mystery spot last year in the program actually stressed me out.

But I did watch half of John Williamson because of it and that worked out well.
