Wanting to polish up on my Garland Jeffreys, and to get a feel for his latest output, I recently purchased his last two 'comeback' albums and I must say, they are bloody excellent. 2011's 'King Of In Between' and last years 'Truth Serum' are as solid, if not better, than anything the man has produced in his career. 'The King Of In Between' in particular is wonderful, full of the stylistic mix that Garland is renowned for. Blues, R'n'B, Dancehall Reggae, Garage Rock, acoustic balladeer etc. Sometimes he channels Lou Reed, other times he sounds like a NYC version of John Hiatt. The only strange moment, if you could call it that, is a carbon copy cover of David Essex's 'Rock On' to round out the album.

Likewise, 'Truth Serum' is even rawer and full of variety. To my ears, the only 'try too hard' moment is the title track, which has Garland trying to be 70's era John Lee Hooker or perhaps Junior Kimbrough. It is also obvious what the song Truth Serum is about, but for Garland to throw in an offhanded "I'm talking about alcohol..." is like, yeah, we get it Garland!! But everything else is quality and provides really positive examples of what we can expect from Garland when he headlines the Juke Joint.

Me, for one, am very much looking forward to it!

I will definitely be seeing Garland Jeffreys close out the Thursday night at The Duke Joint.
