Damn, I was at North Sea Jazz in 2011; Prince headlined then too, and on the undercard was Bootsy Collins, speaking of slap bass. Bootsy gets the nod in the costume department, naturally.....

A strong funk option has typically proven a sleeper hit in one of the smaller tents for anyone who doesn't feel like braving the headliner in Mojo. I daresay Larry and co. will filll that role most capably for BF2014.

You could have a whole hour of watching Larry slap the bass

Dear Mr Ranger,
Thank you for posting this.
Larry Graham is now on my unmissable list.
Just brilliant musicianship.

When they go low-we go high.

Has he ever played in Au ?
Did Sly & The Family Stone ever play in Au ?
I would suggest that he will be in terms of influence, the most significant bass player ever to play Bluesfest.

im pretty sure THE FAMILY STONE played harvest festival a few years ago(2011),but did not contain larry graham.(or sly for that matter).i don't think hes ever been to Australia.

i think larry invented the slap bass..and I love him for that.i know quite a few bass players who love his work.
I was always a big sly and family stone fan,so I hope he plays some of that.but could listen to quite a bit of his slap bass.
i wont miss him!!!

ps warren Haynes is also a big sly and family stone fan having dedicated a whole gig to their music.

Well it started at least 15 minutes late due to the time it look them to get the gear sorted out,so we got about 55 minutes instead of 75 minutes.
Larry starting off in the tent with his portable transmitter attached to his guitar and used it while before switching to conventional was a great opener.
Love the costumes.
How many other bands have a bassist as their lead.
Victor Wooten ?
Superlative funky set including a good slice of Sly & The Family Stone History.
I won't tell you which tracks so as not to spoil it.
Do not miss the opportunity today to catch the legend.
That is of course assuming you love funk.

got a bit of a shock when waiting for the start when i got a tap onthe shoulder and a... coming through! turned to see the white glittering suit...with matching fedora..of larry coming through the crowd.

loved the prince and sly and family stone numbers. good entertainment.

The girl who sang, I cant stand the rain, was amazing, man she really hates rain !!!!
thought she would pass out, singing, for someone who didn't look like a powerhouse singer , she was achingly emotional about not standing the rain, very entertaining, and Larry ofcourse and the whole band were my highlight from yesterday
hope he comes back

That gig was soo good the time just flew by.
They seemed to do about four songs and then everyone was up on stage
and then it was all over and some guy was telling us about the next act and I was like
"What just happened, is that it???"

A special thanks for the original poster who caused us to check him out.

Aside from being an amazing performer, Larry and his band rate as best dressed for me, good to see people making an effort as performers, rather than old T shirt and jeans. Good show Guys

After being drawn into his set on Delta (simply walking past wasn't an option), there was no way that I was going to miss his set on Jambalaya on the following night.
