I had the privilege of witnessing the amazing Cassandra Wilson perform on Sunday night. She has a voice unparalleled by any living female (or male for that matter) singer I have heard - deep, smoky, languid and sensual - memories of the incomparable Nina Simone. She closed out her set with an incredible version of Son House's Death Letter which sent shivers down my spine.

Thanks for the review Pete, you've pushed into going to the Sydney Opry on Saturday
First saw Cassandra on a documentary on the song Strange Fruit, had to scrawl her name on a scrap of paper and brought 4 CDs subsequently.
The Clarksdale centred "Belly of the Sun" is a good start.

Heading out for the East Coast / Lord knows I've paid some dues gettin' through, / Tangled up in blues.

She was featured on the RN music show last Saturday with Andrew Ford.

If you can forgive him for giving evidence against Men at Work in the Kookaburra case have a listen here http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/musicshow/the-music-show-8th-june-2013/4731848

[Note to self]>>Keep up with performers that are coming to NZ in case you miss something you're gonna kick yourself for.

I just wish she'd done Aussie first so that you'd have posted this earlier..... Thanks anyway, I won't miss her next time

Great night with a very tight ensemble and a truly amazing percussionist.

I'll bet Sun House never imagined his little tune being played with Charlie MacMahon's didgeridoo as accompanyment.
