Ray Manzarak the founding member of the Doors has just passed away in Germany after a long battle with cancer. RIP Ray you bought joy to millions in one of the great bands in history.

The Doors and Jimi Hendrix Experience were my two favourite bands

Thanks Spanner - this is awful news. The Doors were close to my favourite band of the 60's (as with Patrick, along with Hendrix). I was privileged to see Ray and Robbie Kreiger with the Doors of the 21st Century some years ago in Melbourne and had recently suggested they be invited next year. Ray's sad passing seems to mark the end of an era.

RIP.

I was privileged to see The Doors Of 21st Century at Myer Music Bowl and they were ace. That Doors sound was in full glory and Ian Astbury carried the Morrison thing off pretty well. I really enjoyed that gig....it had Blondie and Michael Franti as supports if I remember.

I assume this is a syndicated fairfax article.
Does not even allow posting.

What has an interview with Densmore which solely consists of him talking about Jim,and the fact that he would only perform as the Doors with a singer he alone chose, and then only at something like live aid,got to do with the death of Ray Manzarek.

When I listened to the Doors music,Densmore to me was the least important person.
Ray and Robby got on with performing the songs of the Doors, without his presence.
With a decent vocalist, they were fine.

Businesses have different owners and staff over time.
Personal relationships come together and break up.
You have to move on.
No point dwelling in the past.
That is what Densmore has done.
Petty stuff.

Densmore treats Morrison like as irreplacable.
No-one is irreplacable.
Burdon is more to the point in his comment.
Morrison blew himself up.
That doesn't mean Manzarek & Krieger need to stop playing the Doors music.
The public want to hear it,and they want to hear Manzarek's & Krieger's distinctive instrumentation.

Interesting comment by Burdon on Jerry Lee Lewis.
I've never liked Jerry Lee Lewis.
Always thought he was a way over rated redneck.
Had the supreme advantage of being white.

You are correct I was working there and it was one of the Music and Blues festivals that had originaly started off down by the Polly Woodside with some Government funding, which over a couple of years featured some amazing talent Ray charles and Dylan from memory amongst others. But it was never well named or promoted.

I was a bit sus on how the gig by the Doors of the 21st Century would be, but as soon as they came out and started off with Roadhouse Blues I was happy and am glad that I was there to see it, as it is the closest I got to the real thing. I agree that Astbury did well and did go over the top.

Very shortly after that gig Densmore and the estate of Morrison won a legal battle to stop Ray and Robbie from using the name and various logos etc, and they had to pay back profits from merch and other stuff. So I think we were lucky to see them.

RIP Ray another part of my youth gone.

I have watched the five versions of this song on Youtube.
As a Doors fanatic,I rate them
1 Morrison
2 Weiland
3 Astbury
4 Vedder
5 Hall.

Weiland is the only one besides Jim who has a strong enough voice for this Doors song.
And what a fantastic song to have as side one track one on your first album.
The only time I have seen him previously was in a clip of the Band Alice in Chains,on a Jools Holland DVD compilation.

Which reminds,me how silly it was of John Densmore and Morrison's estate to litigate against Manzarek & Krieger.
A pointless exercise as now Ray is gone.
Petty stuff.

Beth Hart is featured on Bluesfest Facebook covering Jim Morrison.
As a Doors tragic, her version just doesn't do it for me.

I prefer this covers band from somewhere on the continent.
