Hi,
I was contacted the other day by the wife of an artist performing at Bluesfest.
she said that she was talking with her husband about which artist has performed the most shows at Bluesfest - and who would be the top 10 performers who have played the most.
I said I thought it would be Hat Fitz - she said that if you count how many performances an artists has had - i.e. if an artist played more than once at a festival - or was an advertised guest with another artist, such as Kasey Chambers performing with Buddy Miller - or in her cover band Lost Dogs - that it is Kasey Chambers.
Or is it Ben Harper, or The Backsliders ?
Does anyone have programming info going back over the years so they can provide the real top 10 ?
Or would you like to vote for your Top 10

I certainly can't get my hands on the formal supporting documentation, but I thought that Johnny Green's Blues Cowboys would have racked up quite a few along the way as well.

I'm guessing it would be Hat or the Backsliders who have performed the most , although the Backsliders were ably replaced by the Angry Tradesmen last year. I'm missing them already this year.

Eugene Hideaway Bridges seemed to turn up everywhere when he is at Bluesfest and Xavier has certainly done his share of guest appearances.
I would have thought Kasey...........ian interesting question.

Given that Kasey's various incarnations have all been included, how about Rob Hirst as an individual?

Jeff Lang must have racked up a few- I recall years when he had four or five sets, eg two solo sets and two with Bob Brozman.

thanks to Dave O'Sullivan, the Australian Editor of Blueswax and Blues Revue, who has records going back, and which I have added some more info on, I now have the following to post
Dave believes Jeff Lang is the artist who has played bluesfest the most with approx 15 performances - beginning in 1994
The Backsliders second with approx 14 performances
John Butler third with 13
Hat Fitz - fourth with 11 - I believe Fitzy has played more - does anyone have info ?

other ranking artists include - Blind Boys of Alabama - around 8 approx
Psycho Zydeco - around 8-10 approx
Terrance Simien - approx 10
The Paladins - approx 8-10
Ben Harper - approx 10
Taj Mahal - between 10 and 12
Kasey Chambers - I believe between 11 and 14 - anyone have more info - she has performed with Buddy Miller, as a member of Lost Dogs and Dead Ringers and solo - and this year with Shane.
Phil Manning - solo and with Chain 10-11 times
Mal Eastick - 8 times
Michael Franti/Spearhead - 10 times plus
Others we have not counted so far include - Steve Earle, Wiley Reed, Johnny Green's Blues
Cowboys, Guy Davis, Ozomatli.
This is a good start toward getting a definitive list - does anyone else want to offer any more info?
We have done a quick search around the Bluesfest office, and we have playing schedules going back to 1994 - we do not have our first 4 years - 1990 until 1993.
Does anyone have playing schedule info for these years ? if so, I really would appreciate a scan of them sent to me at the Bluesfest office.
We are going to go through our records after the festival this year, and get this list updated.
Meanwhile, the above is very interesting......

I think Fitzy has played every year since 1994 - he may not be listed on the first couple of posters - as he is part of
'and many more' - as back then we didn't list everyone
this would mean that if he has played an average of twice per fest - and I think he only played once a few times - he will still easily lead the count - as he will be near to 30 performances.
Can anyone confirm 1994 was his first year ?

Im thinking 94

There was one fest where he played 3 sets, 2 where he played 1 and the rest 2 sets

As far as I can remember

29 sets??

Wouldn't a solo artist have the advantage. They have the sets they perform in their own right, and would also have others where they performed or sat in with other people, or their own group.

Surely Hats Fitz would have played the most. The early fests had a number of Aust. acts who played each of the days (at least once). (Being 3 or less days) The printed programs were also a bit more "flexible" back then - so some performances may have not made the program.

For groups - The Backsliders - would have to be well ahead of anyone else wouldn't they?

Hi Peter,

Are you thinking of putting the old playing schedules up on the website once you have them all? They would make for interesting viewing. And probably help close down a few arguments.

(That's assuming people's memories aren't good enough to remember any scheduling changes.)

he wouldn't be number one, but i daresay john butler would be right up there. one year ('03 i think?) he made about 7 guest appearances.

The poster formerly known as Dan

The original question regarded "official", ie scheduled guest spots; not one of Butler strong suits. I'll stick with Jeff Lang as the answwer!!!

The Dynaflows have had to have played at least 12 Blues Festivals.
BTW I have a few posters from the very first Blues Fest in 1991.
Any deserving person who collects this stuff is most welcome.
Must have others to complete a series not just a money grab.
NO CHARGE...and not an April Fools prank.

Interesting thread but let's stick to the facts. Everyone who is saying this will be Hat Fitz's 14th consecutive fest, tell me one thing. What day/time did he play in 2004? If you can't answer the question, you should withdraw the claim.
