He has a nationwide tour coming up. Daniel O Donnell is playing the state again.

I remember someone mentioned him last year as a dark horse. Every year the festival brings over some irish acts, It looks like the timing of his tour is pretty good for BF.
I cant remember what people were saying about him expect that he headlined folk festivals all over europe has had several grammy nominations and is one of those Irish anti pop artists who plays by his own rules.

Its funny ive never seen him live as he sells out his tours months in advance to a cult following here. I cant really see him only playing to Irish expats as he definatley has an international vibe after playing to over 100,000 at the Prima Vera festival in Italy.

I always enjoy watching international folk artists and I have a feeling this guy could be the breakthrough for 2012 like trombone shortly was in 2011.

A bit harsh.. I think , as per the last response.

I did a bit of searching on the net pretty impressive a little soft but not bad not bad at all. Not your typical Irish BF act either. Left of center possibly quite political, covers a lot of genres, doubt he'd be bringing that epic stage set up to BF. I'm looking on EBay for some sydney tickets as there's no chance i'll be missing him this time.

Here more of a what to expect add for one of his old dvd's from 06 he's been rocking out for close to 40 years in Europe.

After the negative response to the Bellrays, it's clear that a Bluesfest audience don't want to see rock'n'roll.
On the other hand a young up and comer like Daniel Champagne had his audience spellbound.
Daniel O'Donnell is too extreme for the Bluesfest audience.

Well said Greybeard, eloquent as usual.
Is there more than one Daniel ODonnell?.
You could not seriously describe the clean cut night club/vegas singer as extreme or worthy of a Buesfest spot.
Unless of course you have Des O'CDonnor, Michael Buble & Darryl Sommers doing back to back sets, in which case perfect fit.
His album covers look like the type that are released specially for Mother's Day.

I doubt that he could be considered clean cut or any Irish acts clean cut, Sinead O Connor and MacGowan etc. Theres nothing wrong with releaseing records for mothers day the same way as artists release records for Christmas. Bob Dylan etc comes to mind. If I came home and found my four foot two Greek mother rocking out to Dan O Donnell I'd be mildly amused

As per his website : Roddy Doyle wrote that “the Irish are the blacks of Europe and Dubliners are the blacks of Ireland and the Northside Dubliners are the blacks of Dublin”. Born in Donaghmede on Dublin’s Northside in Daniel is the voice of that underclass and the quintessential Irish singer songwriter. .

We had John Legend last year so why not O'Donnell ? Valid question is it not?

oh please, this guy is a long way from rock n roll. i hope this suggestion is not serious.
im open to most types of GOOD MUSIC but not lounge crooners.

unfortunately dan the bellrays were on of the few bluesfest bands that i hated.maybe some liked them but not me.-more bdo or splendour.

I don't want to hang up my rock n roll shoes
I get a good time feeling every time I hear those blues.

The Bellrays were horrible.

"An artist never really chooses when and where they will play.It is for promoters to make offers. It comes down as to whether tours are financially viable." Quote John Mayall.

I don't know why they don't just call 'Chain'..

It's genuine..  'Australian' ''BLUES''.
Always has been, always will,
'Mathew Taylor 'sings about us!
They didn't play Goulburn.
Every new generation needs to learn about Australian Blues.

Thanks Maccain,,,, this is the funniest thread I've read for ages,

It would be great entertainment value watching this guy get booed offstage,,,
Maybe a back to back set with Barry Manilow and Acker Bilk on Clarinet,,,
I once suggested Yanni so I really have no right to criticize.

Too right, the greatest Aussie blues legend there ever was, still producing amazing music and a lovely man too!
Has he ever played at Byron Bluesfest?

I finally got around to seeing the BellRays last year - I liked em. I was surprised to see they were founded in California way back whenever....I thought they did a pretty good job with the Detroit garage sound.

I'd love to see the festival take a chance with O'Donnell, even if his massive following would clearly make it a "mainstream" choice. Sometimes, you have to give the people what they want. Obviously it would risk bringing in a rogue element to the crowd - the sniffer dogs would have their work cut out with the O'Donnell crew. But surely the added credibility that he would bring would offset any perceived downside.

As we all know Daniel O'Donnell has a roguish rep to say the least & getting him on the same bill as Shane MacGowan could be either a recipe for disaster or a damn good time.

An interesting little known fact outside of Ireland, is that Daniel has been a mentor to Sinead O'Connor for many years and co-written a number of her songs. If he's announced he could bring a surprise guest for a duet, could be epic. Although with O'Connors history with MacGowan it could also be disasterous. Let me the music do the talking is what I say.......

Thats an amazing story. I'd love to see any artist that give this much of himself to his fans play bluesfest!

The danger in allowing such controversial artists like "Slayer" "Cannibal Corpse" "Rammstein" and "Daniel O Donnell"
Is the high probability that the minions that follow these bands all over the world, won't easily fit into the laid back,
peaceful, earthy vibe of our beloved bluesfest...

Jumping the gun a bit Greybeard, this is only weeks before the festival & I am sure that Maccain wouldn't mind putting him up for a few weeks at his place.
