Don Cornelius - the visionary creator & compere of Soul Train has died in the US at the age of 75.
For me this was the greatest musiv TV show of them all.
Soul Train aired in the US from the early 70's until the early 90's - and then went on to syndication (reruns) for around another 15 years.
It literally introduced Black music to American households - and was more than a little Funky - and mixed it up as is expected in Black households - featuring the latest
hits artists along with the Stars - such as James Brown, Al Green, BB King - EVERYONE.
To be in a Black household Saturday around noon when Soul Train went to air - with EVERYONE dancing in front of the TV set - from babies to Grandma's was one of my greatest experiences - the Soul Train Dancers were the coolest on the block.
To say Soul Tain changed the face of American music before the advent of (white music ) MTV is an understatement, it had a profound effect in bringing Black culture into peoples homes, and I would take a bet that more than a few Anglo families hunkered down for a weekly dose.
I have been fortunate enough to see many episodes over the years - especially when I lived in the US in the 1970's.
It is not often one get's an opportunity to pay tribute to one of the Great's behind the scenes - who actually present the music in a way that defines it for
generations.
Don cornelius was one of the greats.
As the Maori people would say at a time like this
A mighty tree has fallen

Unfortunately I never got to experience the Soul Train TV show but have been enjoying youtube clips of the exceptional artists that have played on the show for years . They certainly had the best of the best but it really was the dancers that made the show for me . Man they had the moves , and the hair, and the clothes , AAAHH the 70's.
Thanks Don Cornelius.

this show was an iconic part of my youth and african american culture. 'THE SOoooUL TRAIN'; it was truly "the hippest trip in america." as the slogan would say. it was the black 'american bandstand'. so many great songs we're first heard on this show. we could be proud of our music, dances, afro hair and fashion style as it whipped acroosed the airwaves all over america. it was simply a great idea; and it's very sad to hear that don cornelius would take his own life, very very sad. but may his soul be at peace now. i will keep rocking venues with the musical legacy of my heritage, in your honor DC. <3
