check compatability of dvd regions. u.k. dvds are PAL and may not be viewable on dvd players in australia .some players will play all regions.

I don't want to hang up my rock n roll shoes
I get a good time feeling every time I hear those blues.

Aus TV's are also PAL (this only affects the colour on screen though - American NTSC will play in black and white on older Australian TVs). As for the DVD region coding, it seems to be a bit of a wildcard as far as how much of an effect it has.

My experience -

Cheaper DVDs (as in, distributed by smaller companies) tend to be playable on most machines. I suspect that production cost increases if including region coding, so it often gets ignored.
Toshiba and Pioneer brand DVD players are generally able to play discs of any region. For other players, there is normally a code online by brand that can be entered to over-ride region coding.
Cheaper players often don't have the hardware to recognise DVD region coding, but there is no hard and fast rules on players/brands that this applies to.

So all in all, Waffles is right that it pays to be cautious, but there is normally only one way to find out - take a splash.

Worst comes to worst, PC DVD players normally let you switch the "home" region up to 5 times, so you can at least get a look at whatever you bought.

Thanks for the suggestion, however, do your sums on this before you use it.

I found that stuff was generally a bit cheaper on the US amazon, and by the time you buy $50 worth, the postage difference possibly still left the UK version more expensive.
