When I heard this tune from his new album Sad Clowns & Hillbillies I felt like I was nearly hearing Tom Waits.
Carlene Carter (daughter of June Carter) sings on a few tunes on this album as well.

Always great taste GB. Nina Simone, privileged to see the great diva in Melbourne in 1993. Did she have any peers?? Of the hundreds of gigs/concerts I've seen, I'm struggling to think of anyone who came remotely close to her. Maybe Solomon Burke the first time at bluesfest; maybe Irma Thomas singing the songs of Mahalia Jackson in the gospel tent at jazzfest; maybe Patti's sublime performance of Horses in Melbourne recently; maybe Henry Butler with New Orleans' finest after midnight at the Maple Leaf in NOLA; possibly Wynton Marsalis and Odada's performance of Congo Square at jazzfest. In any event, she's certainly near the top of the best 10 gigs I have ever seen.

Hi Guys. Love Nina and I am exploring all back catalogues, but recently watched Nina at Montreaux 1976. Whoaaaa!!!! Hostile and off the planet- in front of multiple cameras. An experience that will colour my judgement unless you point me to visual that puts that performance in some broader context.
And on the eve of 50 years since Sgt Peppers, I must say how much I love the simple stereo of the past. Driving to work this morning to listening to little girl blue from 1959 and I could swear Nina was riding shotgun.

saw the Montreaux 1976 performance on foxtel a while back & yeah she sure took control!
Some love her attitude others not so much but one thing I remember thinking was she did things in her own way.
Van the man is in some ways similar but most know what's expected so as long as people are aware before seeing an artist with that sort of attitude that's exactly what they get & if they don't I'm sure some would be disappointed.

She suffered from bi-polar disorder which went largely undiagnosed for much of her life and which from time to time led to hostile outbursts. However, at her Melbourne show, she was utterly gracious and charming, but such are the vagaries of this terrible affliction.
She wasn't averse to shooting at people either, including a record company executive she claimed stole from her! She was not a "nice" person. In the civil rights movement, she was more aligned with the radicalism of Malcolm X rather than Martin Luther King.

Yes Nina suffered from undiagnosed bi-polar, a violent marriage, was close to many in the black power movement at the time they were being assassinated
A mental health story in the Brian Wilson mold ( without the predator psychiatrist)
What happened, Miss Simone - is a very good bio with production input from her daughter
I watched on Netflix -but looks to be available in 6 parts on Youtube

Unless you suffer that condition yourself or are close to someone who does people would have no idea.
I know that for a fact as someone very close to myself suffers from it & @ times the best I can do is either try to be there for them or distance myself from them.
Sounds cruel I know but if not things turn very nasty between us.
At times I feel guilty but it's the best I can do.
Otherwise our relationship would Be non existent.

Exploring Spotify for various new acts.
Checked out The Teskey Brothers, as they are supporting Busby Marou up at Newcastle tonight (keen as, after catching them in Jambalya this year). They are fantastic. Absolutely would not be out of place at Bluesfest. Fabulous sound.
