I have just heard the news that this iconic Sydney venue is closing down. This is insane...what is going on in this city??? Live music is being killed off. It’s really time to get very very angry. I come from Melbourne and normally wouldn’t give a rat’s backside about what happens in Sydney but if you care about live music in this country then it’s time to make a stand and come out in support of Sydney musicians and the dying Sydney live music scene.

I presume you mean THE BASEMENT.

I don't want to hang up my rock n roll shoes
I get a good time feeling every time I hear those blues.

I have been to the Basement many times, always found their 9.30 starts inconvenient
The then subsequent late finish even worse - leave early to catch the last boat or a walk /bus/walk combo
into mid morning- often on a work day
Dinning up to 9.30 was never my lifestyle

Heading out for the East Coast / Lord knows I've paid some dues gettin' through, / Tangled up in blues.

This is a classic and ugly example of corporate greed.
The AMP simply want this piece of real estate and will do whatever it takes to get it.
I have been following this closely and the lies told by the suits are reprehensible.
I have enjoyed many shows at The Basement and its closure would be devastating for punters and Sydney.
That's why Melbourne is my preferred destination for shows.
(Especially The Corner hotel).

I went and saw Robbie Fulks at the Basement in October last year and honestly there would have been maybe 30 people there.........it was embarassing.

Coggee diggers (in the eastern suburbs) was the same, I saw the Deslondes and traveller. both great bands but a very poor crowd in numbers. and this is also a great smaller venue.

But then I went to the Camelot lounge in January to see a bluegrass band and it was packed with punters - I really got a shock at what a good size crowd it was. Admittedly we were all of a certain age ( middle) but we were there supporting live music.

I agree Sydney is not a music town any more, thats for sure.

Another nail in the coffin for live music in Sydney.
Not sure how much more it can take before it's completely dead and buried.
Travellers from overseas would be a little perplexed at such a vibrant looking city with so little entertainment on offer.
When I think of the smaller venues that offer some great entertainment I instantly think of the corner in Melbourne & the basement in Sydney.
I just can't understand why this is happening as sooner or later something's got to give.
Surely these kind of venues bring in cash as well as give local talent a foot up in the music biz ...talk about shooting yoursel in the foot.
