Am really looking fwd to this year's festival, particularly the great bands from Louisiana. Just checking my schedule to see who else is playing and i noticed a dearth of female performers. I am sure there is some gold in there somewhere and I hope to be surprised, but i dont see any major talent like Mavis Staples or bonnie Raitt. Mary Gauthier is in the country at the moment. She would have been brilliant. As would local talent like the Wolfgramm Sisters

How come?

As I'm not attending this year I haven't paid that much attention BUT the name of Oumou Sangare leaps to mind...

Oumou Sangare was very good, Imelda may with Beck was good. Patty Larkin was ok.

No way i was gonna punish myself by seeing Jess mauboy or that whiny old tart, Rene Geyer, so tell me, where are the major female artists?

May I suggest the following sources of female artists..........

Jools Holland & his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra
Grace Barbe
Joanne Shaw Taylor
Music Maker Foundation
Tribali
Imelda May & her band of Englishmen
Brian Auger's Oblivion Express
eMDee

Who needs headliners when you have the following female vocalists at a Bluesfest festival.
Ruby Turner
Imelda May
Savannah Auger

On a tangent,Elton John is a headline artist who will fill a 30,000 stadium.
By comparison,to the general public,Jools Holland and Jon Cleary are not headline artists, and will not fill a 30,000 stadium.
In many walks of life,it is those with the high profile who attract the most lemmings.
Yet there are many less publicised alternatives which are at least equal in quality, and often superior.

Tracey Chapman

When you're lost in the rain in Juarez
And it's Eastertime too
And your gravity fails
And negativity don't pull you through
Don't put on any airs
When you're down on Rue Morgue Avenue
They got some hungry women there
And they really make a mess outta you.

I'd add as well as agreeing with most of the other suggestions (& pretend I didn't read the one directly above)
Sharon Jones & Dap Kings
Candye Kane
Ani Difranco
Etta James

Bettye LaVette - The Scene of the Crime - a great recent recording of someone who has come out the other side. If the rest of the ladies to come are as good as her it should not be a problem.

Trumpet bells ringing
Bass drum is swinging
As the trombone groans
And the big horn moans

looking forward to her.

I don't want to hang up my rock n roll shoes
I get a good time feeling every time I hear those blues.

I agree with all suggestions above and would add Dallas Frasca who is one of the raunchiest acts in oz.

Speedhump that no one responded to. V nice posters!

Ditto all the above artist suggestions...emphasising need for Dallas Frasca.

And add The Waifs.

Wish P!nk would go under a pseudonym, she does good blues.

Would have loved Amy Winehouse.

Buddy Guy is without doubt the best guitar player alive.......the way he plays is beyond anyone. Amen
