The blues happen when a man is sad or down on his luck. As opposed to Emo, which occurs when a pretentious teenage hipster is having a normal day.

Just The Facts

The blues originated from gospel (religious music), and paved the way for Rock N' Roll (the devil's music).
The blues has given way to several other genres of music including, R&B, Soul, and Jazz.
Some notable blues musicians include Robert Johnson, B.B. King, Lead Belly, John Lee Hooker, Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn. Note the lack of John Mayer.

History of the Blues

Blues originated from the south in the late 1800's evolving from old negro spirituals and gospel hymns. Black people in those days were feeling rather sad and oppressed.

Can't imagine why

After finally being freed from the oppressive boot of slavery blacks moved off the plantations to get jobs and work under the oppressive fist of a white-owned economy. They took the themes from their old hymns and changed the lyrics to reflect the troubles of the the blue collar working stiff or tell old bits of folklore. Mix in a little guitar.. Blues was born. The lyrics were centered around women, drinking, working, murder.drugs, voodoo. the devil. You know, typical stuff.

The electric guitar was invented and it didn't take long for the blues to gain international fame and inspire artists the world over to adopt this melancholy form of self expression. They were like early 20th century emo kids.

Totally efuceekaying emo

To be fair, the blues can incorportate some of the most heartfelt lyrics of pain and sorrow with skillful and impressive instrument playing. Only a small handful of artists from the golden age of The Blues are still alive. This has had the unwanted side-effect of convincing John Mayer that he has talent, or anything to be sad about at all.

Whoever made the lyrical content chart and put that little slice for sex must have missed many of the double entendres. That or they got the colours wrong. Maybe it is supposed to be:
dark blue - sex
red - drugs & alc
green - sadnes
purple - devil
